System Optimize Tips

Here you'll find a collection of tips tricks and tweaks.

1) Run ‘Vcache Calculator’ and choose your vcache settings. Then open ‘EditSystem.ini’ bat file. In the ini file, look for [vcache] and add the following:

MaxFileCache=xxxxx

MinFileCache=xxxx

ChunkSize=xxxx

You must restart for the new optimal settings to take effects.

2) Defrag your Hard Disk first. Go to Control Panel > System > Performance > Virtual Memory and choose "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings". Specify the same amount of space for minimum and maximum swap file size. Make the swap file twice the amount of RAM you have on your system (or at least the same size as your RAM). Reboot your computer.

Note: If you have more than one Hard Disk, use the fastest/newest one for your swap file location.

3) Go to control panels\system and click on device manager.  Go to disk drives and click on your hard drive, go to properties and click the settings tab and then tick the DMA box.  Do this for all your hard drives.  If on next boot the tick disappears then one or more of your hard drives don't support DMA access. Windows sees your hard drives as though they were on one IDE channel.  You may be able to squeeze a few more drops of performance out of those disks by: right-clicking on 'My Computer' and pulling up its 'Properties', selecting the Device Manager tab, then opening the Hard Disk Controllers section. At that point, you should see your device controller at the top of the list (something with the words Bus Master in it, most likely); pull up its Properties and flip to the Settings tab. Select 'Both IDE Channels Enabled' from the drop-down menu, reboot, and see if you've made a difference.

4) Go to 'Control Panel' and click 'Network'. Make sure you have 'Client for Microsoft Networks' to save trouble. If you don't have it this is why your Internet Dial-up Password wouldn't save. In dial-up networking make uncheck the 'Log on to Network' under Server Types. You can also get rid of the "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX".

NOTE: This will only effect your login time. In some cases it is necessary to keep this box checked.

5) To improve your system's reliability and gain some more speed, you should remove the multiple devices that build up when changing drivers and hardware. Restart your PC in Safe mode (Press F8 while system is booting and choose Safe Mode from the menu). Right-click on the "My Computer" icon, choose "properties", open the "Device Manager" tab. Check all the device categories, and remove all but the first instance of the devices on your system.

Note: Don't change your devices' properties while in Safe Mode.

6) The refresh rate is how often a screen is refreshed. A higher refresh rate provides a clearer screen and less eyestrain.

1.       Right click on an empty portion of the desktop.

2.   Click Properties.
3.   Click Settings.
4.   Click Advanced Properties.
5.   Click on Adapter.
6.   Click the arrow on Refresh rate drop down menu.
7.   The available choices on the drop down menu vary depending on your video card and monitor.
Try the highest Refresh rate and see how the screen looks.

7) Speed up buffering of data between your modem and your modem port. This enables your modem to retrieve information faster.

1.       Right click My Computer.

2.       Click Properties.

3.       Click Device Manager.

4.       Click Ports.

5.       Double click COMx (or whatever your modem's COM port is).

11.  Click and drag the Receive and Transmit Buffers. Set the slider all the way to high.

12.  Click OK.

      If it does not show up on device manager, then you must have an internal modem. In this case:

      Type 'win.ini' in your ‘start’, 'run' dialog box. In the ini file, look for [Ports] and change the following:

COMx:=921600,n,8,1,

      1. Click start.
      2. Click control panel.
      3. Click modems.
      4. Click properties.
      5. Click the connection tab.

      6. Click advanced.
      7. In the extra settings dialog box add the string S38=0.

12) The connection icon in the System Tray may say that you're connected at '115200' (or some other bogus number), when you're actually connected at 48000. This is because Windows may be reporting the port speed (not the actual speed the user at which the user is connected). Open the 'Dial-Up Networking' folder (in 'My Computer').
Right-click on an Internet service icon, select 'Properties,' press the 'Configure' button, click the 'Connection' tab, and then press the 'Advanced' button. In the 'Extra settings' field, try adding 'W2' to your initialisation string. Upon doing this, you may see a more accurate connection rate the next time you connect to the Internet.

13) For the user to cheat in MS Hearts, they need to install ‘MSHearts’ reg, then they must press "CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + F12" all at once and it will allow them to see all the cards of the other players in the game instantly.

14) If your computer freeze after connected to Internet, try go to > Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Install/Uninstall > Microsoft Internet Explorer x.xx and Internet Tools > Add/Remove… > Repair Internet Explorer > OK.

15) You can set colors to true color (24 bit or 32bit).

1.       Right click on an empty portion of the desktop

2.       Click Properties.

3.       Click Settings.

4.       Click the arrow on colors drop down menu.

5.       Try the highest bit and see how the screen looks.

Note for WinME users: After restarted, there will be no more checks in ‘Environment’. Those settings had been added in registry.
